Using oil pastels means that I work in a space where drawing and painting come together. I apply the oil pastels like a drawing, then work them with tools until they have the consistency and look of paint.

Often, simple shapes and colors will be the inspiration for a new piece. Once that shape is on paper I build around it, layering colors, adding textures and shapes, to create a visually interesting work of art. Each shape and color is the result of several layers of oil pastel. As the surface is worked, and reworked, it becomes textured from the scrapes of my painting knives and blending tools. The randomness of the texture brings life to thoughtfully arranged colors, shapes, and lines.

I hope that viewers are moved by each composition and allow themselves to connect with the work intuitively and on a personal level.
